Malaysia has commended the decision by the United States (US) and Cuba to re-open diplomatic missions in their respective capitals recently.
In a statement here Wednesday, the foreign ministry said Malaysia was encouraged by this important development and the political commitment demonstrated by both countries to work towards full normalisation of bilateral relations.
"Malaysia hopes the United States and Cuba will continue to advance common interests and values based on the shared principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and International Law, for the benefit of the peoples of both countries and the region as a whole," it said.
The decision was made on July 20, following a landmark agreement by US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro to re-establish diplomatic relations which were severed in 1961.
