Hyperinsulinaemia
Hyperinsulinism is found in obese people with normal glucose tolerance, suggesting that they have some degree of resistance to insulin.
In type 2 diabetic patients, however, and in patients with impaired glucose tolerance modern immunoradiometric assay have shown elevated fasting plasma concentrations of proinsulin and split products of proinsulin. However, it has been harder to confirm raised insulin concentrations in the patients. Fortunately, a variety of other techniques have been used to demonstrate that insulin resistance is present in patients with type 2 diabetes.
