Professionalism, malpractice, liability, and ethics are concepts that have received increased attention by librarians over the past decade. The latest code of ethics was adopted by the American Library Association (ALA) (1981). The California Library Association (1978) has adopted a statement regarding professional responsibility of librarians, and in 1979 the Standards Committee of the Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD) of ALA (1979) adopted a section on “Ethics of Service” as part of its developmental guidelines.
