Drowning and burns are among the top three leading causes of deaths for males and females throughout childhood. In addition, improper use of firearms is a major cause of death among males. During infancy, more males succumb to death from aspiration or suffocation than do females. More than half of all poisonings reported in 1999 occurred in children under 6 years of age. By ages 4 to 5 years, unintentional poisonings are uncommon.
