6. Conclusions
In this study, ANN was applied to forecast the industrial energy
demand and perform future projections for the period 2013e2030.
Among all effective independent parameters on energy demand in
the industrial sector, energy cost and GDP growth have been
considered based on correlation coefficient analysis. Based on the
model trained with historical data of period 1980e2012, the price
of energy significantly affects the amount of energy used in the
industrial sector.
Both multiple linear regression and artificial neural network
models for the energy demand in industrial sector of the United
States have been developed applying various independent variables.
Although models show robust outcomes when their R2 is
considered, performance of ANN model is significantly superior
compared to MLR model.
In 2012, 30,696 Trillion Btu of energy was used in the industrial
sector of the United States. The ANN model anticipates a 16% increase
in energy demand by the end of 2013e2030 period. In this
forecast, the model assumes that the effective independent parameters
remain constant during this period and only GDP grows
with a second order polynomial trend. This assumption is built
upon the trend of effective parameters in the period of 1980e2012
(Constant Price Scenario). The forecasted results, which are in close
accordance with published predictions of the Energy Information Administration of Department of Energy, may be considered as an
indication of the need for development of new and sustainable
energy sources.
Although the increase in the energy demand in industrial sector
of the United States estimated by the ANN is not dramatic, the
United States should keep trying to reduce energy consumption in
order to reduce CO2 emissions and meet its national and international
commitments. Furthermore, improved economic conditions
in the near future may cause the energy model to revise its forecast
in terms of energy consumption in reaction to the tendency of
effective parameters. Exploration of new sources of fossil fuels,
development of new renewable sources, and the trends of economic
development in high energy consuming countries are some
of the main sources of change in the effective parameters of this
study.
Similar to any models developed in energy demand and energy
forecast, the models developed this paper have limitations. One of
these limitations returns to the second order-polynomial growth in
GDP. Given that this study developed the models only based on the
data from 1980 to 2012, this assumption may hold; however,
extension of the analyzed data period and including 1970s' oil
shock for example may be investigated in future research
