Summary
Given the complex nature of bone metastasis, enhancing
patient adaptation requires an organized method of assessment,
intervention, and evaluation. Once the physiology of bone
metastasis is understood, the implications for nursing care can
be explored. The Roy Adaptation Model provides a suitable
model to assess physical (e.g., pain, mobility) and psychosocial
(e.g., self-concept, role function, interdependence) concerns.
Keeping in mind Roy’s description of humans as biopsychosocial
and spiritual beings, nurses can do much to support
the improvement of the patient with bone metastasis. Through
physical assessment, treatment regimens, and pain management,
nurses support the patient’s well-being. Moreover,
nurses can provide invaluable psychosocial support through
education, resource referrals, and counseling.
