3.Middle-class residential tracts. These areas are typically located as close as possible to the elitesector and the periferico in order to ensure access, status and protection. Although not depicted in the model, middle-class housing tracts and/or government housing projects may also be sited in the zone of in situ accretion near the suburban industrial park.
4.Zone of peripheral squatter settlements. This accommodates the impoverished migrants tothe city and is the worst section of the city interms of housing quality and public service provision (see Chapter 25). In addition to ths main squatter areas, Latin American cities also] contain sectors of disamenity (Figure 22.1). | These areas have not consolidated over time through in situ accretion and remain areas of slums and rented tenements (as in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro). Major industrial and environmentally polluting activities are also likely to be located here.
