7.2.5. Additional products from ethylene oxide
Ethylene carbonate and 1,3-propanediol are two products made
from ethylene oxide which have not yet reached the production
volumes of those already listed.
Ethylene carbonate, also known as glycol carbonate or 1,3-dioxolan-
2-one, was originally only obtainable from glycol and
phosgene by double elimination of HCI. In 1943, IG Farben
discovered a new route using ethylene oxide and C02 :
