To return to our starting question, I (and many others) would argue that we can no
longer think of schools as separate from the community. If we take as a starting point that
the aim of a successful education system should be to prepare children and give them the
skills they need to progress in this world, then the most important thing a school can do is
teach a child how to learn. Not what to learn, but how to learn, and how to keep actively
learning as they grow. An enormous part of this is instilling intellectual curiosity into
learners (of all ages—this applies equally to lifelong learning and teaching). Another part
of this is reframing what counts as knowledge to value both school and community
contributions.
