Hills like White Elephants is a very simplistic and vague story. I enjoyed reading it and it really pushed me to use my imagination because so many details of character’s lives were left out. However, many of these small details about the characters’ relationship are suggested and symbolized throughout the story. The characters in the story are referred to as “the man” and “the girl”, which I perceived as an indication that there was some inequality in their relationship; as if he were much older than her or somehow had power over her. Another interesting thing I noticed about the story is that while Hemingway was not very descriptive in writing this, the tone of the man and girl’s conversation was still pretty clear. I also like how the actual subject of their conversation is never said aloud because it leaves the reader to come up with their own personal opinion on what the story is about. This lack of specificity also shows that the characters are likely talking about something that is not socially accepted or allowed in their time or culture. The story ends with no answers to many question the reader might have, like “What are they talking about?” and “What is the relationship between them?”. This type of ending leaves the reader to interpret the story in his or her own personal way. Upon reading the story over and over again, I picked up on new symbols and ideas brought up in the text that I never noticed before, which provided me with new thoughts regarding the details of story. I think this story is worth reading because the ambiguity leads the reader to actively think and contemplate the many possible meanings of the story.
