The Athenian school struggled on against the growing opposition of the Christians until the latter finally, in 529 A.D., obtained from Emperor Justinian decree which closed the doors of the school forever. The school at Alexandria fared little better at the hands of the Christians but at least remained open until the fall of Alexandria to the Arabs in 64l, who then put the torch to what the Christians had left. The long and glorious history of Greek mathematics came to an end.
