Anaerobic digestion is a biological degradation process to
convert organic compounds such as carbohydrates, proteins,
and fats, into methane and carbon dioxide, known as biogas,
in the absence of dissolved oxygen. It is widely used to stabilize
the excess sludge from aerobic treatment systems and is
currently applied for treating high strength wastewaters to
produce biogas, as well as to reduce post-treatment costs [1].
