Struggling photographer Catherine "Caddy" Wilcox is overjoyed to be offered the opportunity to photograph the small White-tailed Kite for Nature's World Magazine. The reclusive bird is thought to be nesting on privately owned Kincade Island, located off the Connecticut coast. The local residents don't take well to outsiders either and Caddy has been warned not to intrude on the privacy of any island residents. When elderly Nelson Lovering, the local bird expert, is temporarily laid up, he requests that Attorney Fiske Spencer show Caddy the nesting sites. Having recently broken up with her longtime beau, Caddy is disconcerted to find herself attracted to Fiske. When a land developer makes an underhanded attempt to obtain one or more parcels of land on Kincade Island, Fiske must gather the Islanders together to deal with the potential crisis. Caddy has always been ambitious and is determined to reach the top of her profession. Fiske's tendency to blow hot then cold frustrates Caddy, but she can't turn her back when she discovers who is helping the developer purchase the land. Despite their outward differences, Fiske and Caddy seem a perfect match. But will ambition, family loyalties and just plain stubbornness ruin their opportunity for happiness?
