Finally, we assessed the impact of empirical articles
using citation counts from the Institute for Scientific
Information’s (ISI) Social Sciences Citation Index
(SSCI). The SSCI provides citation counts for
articles published in thousands of journals since
1954. It therefore includes data on all AMJ volumes.
Citation counts are a commonly used metric for assessing
the impact, quality, and scientific merit of
journal articles and have been used to gauge the relative
prominence of scholarly journals (Podsakoff et
al., 2005; Tahai & Meyer, 1999) and the effects of
article, author, and journal-based variables on article
influence (Judge, Cable, Colbert, & Rynes, 2007).
