The workshop started with a morning session discussion of vision, mission, and strategy. Being first timers to a strategic planning session, participants were oriented to what strategic planning is all about; discussions on the importance of attaining the vision/mission; examples from other companies; and obtaining a shared understanding of core vision and mission, primary tasks, manifest and latent functions. The afternoon session was based on Schein’s strategic planning framework. Each group was tasked to come up with a framework and present their results at the end of the session. The groups were also asked to develop consensus on goals, as derived from the core vision and mission; come up with a SWOT analysis; and consensus on a shared vision. From this, they were asked to develop further consensus on the means used to attain the goals, such as organization structure, division of labor, reward & authority system. They were then able to develop consensus on the criteria to be used in measuring how well the group is doing in fulfilling its goals. Lastly, the groups were tasked with developing consensus on the appropriate remedial or repair strategies to be used if goals are not being met. All participants were given Certificates of Attendance.
