Brahma is known as the creator god. From his mind, he created Manu, the first man. He is known as Prajapati, the progenitor of all species on earth. There are many stories on how he came to be. In one account, he sprouted from a lotus flower that came out of the navel of Vishnu. He is also said to have come into existence to dispel the darkness of the universe. He created the ocean and planted a seed that formed into a golden egg. From that golden egg, he was born in physical form and from his mind created the world and all life within it. He is depicted as having four heads (the fifth having been cut off by Shiva, which you can read about here) for each book of the Vedas. He is married to the goddess, Saraswati, who created the Vedas, is the patroness of the arts, and whose river flows through Rajasthan. Today there are only two temples in his name, which are located in Ajmer and Pushkar, Rajasthan.
