Cipolla (1962) pointed out the strong geoecological conditioning of agricultural
societies – which in fact was a general trend in Europe far into the 19th century –
by means of the influence of these factors on the food productivity and animal
energy. Huntington (1924) showed the relation between climate and civilisation.
In 1975, Gill Carter and Dale, in Topsoil and Civilisation, showed the influence
of soils – resulting from the interaction between climate and rocks – on historical
evolution.
