Distortion
Distortion in drawings occurs when the overall drawing or specific details are drawn in poor proportions, are disconnected, or are placed in inappropriate locations on the body. Hammer (1958) hypothesized that mild distortions reflect low self-concept, anxiety, and poor adjustment, and excessive distortions are characteristics of persons who have experienced a severe emotional upheaval. This has become one of the most strongly supported hypotheses (Chantler et al., 1993; Kahill, 1984; Roback, 1968; Swenson, 1968).
