In theliterature,thedesignofcontinuoussamplingplanshas
considerablyevolvedoverthepastthreedecadesfromdesign
purelyforqualityrequirementswithnoeconomicconsiderationto
the economicdesignunderqualityconstraints.Nevertheless,the
existingcontinuoussamplingplansmodelsdonotconsider
interactionswithproduction,inventoryandmaintenanceaspects.
In thispaper,wehavedevelopednewmodelstothejointeco-
nomic designoftype-1continuoussamplingplan,production,
inventoryandpreventivemaintenancefordeterioratingproduc-
tion processessubjecttoanAOQLconstraint.Theproposedmodels
contribute toresearchonintegratedproduction,qualityand
maintenance infourways.First,wehaveshownthatcontinuous
sampling planscanbeusedfordeterioratingprocesses,provided
that theinterrelationswithproduction,maintenanceandprocess
qualityarefullyconsideredinthedesignprocessofthoseplans.In
practice, this finding shouldextendtheapplicationofcontinuous
sampling planstonewindustrialareas,astheyarepresently
limited tostableproductionprocesses.Second,wedemonstrated
through argumentsandexperimentsthatusingcontinuoussam-
pling plansratherthanthe100%inspectionpolicyincreasesthe
overalloperationalperformanceandcanrealizeimportantcost
savings.Third,wehavefoundthattheCSP-1withstoppingrulesis
more effectivefordeterioratingprocesses,thantheclassicalCSP-1.
In fact,whenaCSP-1stoppingruleiscoupledwiththeCBPM,
unnecessary TBPMactionsareavoidedandthereforeadditional
cost savingsareachievable.Oneadvantageofthisstrategyliesin
the factthattheCBPMbasedonqualityinformationfeedbackdoes
not requirecostlyandadvancedtechnologyfordataacquisition
and analysissuchasvibration,corrosionandacousticsanalysis
techniques.Qualityinformationcaneasilybecollectedfromthe
CSP-1andinterpretedtoassesstheprocesscondition.Finally,
another importantcontributionofthisstudyliesintheeffective-
ness oftheproposedmodellingandoptimizationframeworkto
tackle complexandhighlystochasticoptimizationproblemsin
integratedoperationsmanagement.
The integratedproduction,CSP-1andmaintenancemodels
proposed inthispapercanbeappliedforcontinuousproduction
systemssubjecttoreliabilityandqualitydeteriorations,whose
inspection isonlyperformedattheendofproduction,andwhere
bothclosed-loopproduction-inventorycontrolandsamplingplans
areeffectivesuchasintheelectronicsandsemiconductorindus-
tries (see Antila etal.,2008; Cao andSubramaniam,2013; Mok,
2009). Managerialimplicationsforimplementingthoseintegrated
models requireareal-timevisibilityandcontrolofoperations,
WIP, finished productsinventory,productsqualityandinspection
rate.Inaddition,historicaldatarelatedtotheproductsquality
should beproperlyrecordedtomanagetheCSP-1procedure,to
monitor theproductionprocessandtoscheduletheCBPMactions.
This iscanbeeasilysupportedbymoderncomputersoftwaresuch
as theManufacturingExecutionSystems(Kletti, 2007).
One limitationofourstudyistoassumethatonly finished
productsareinspectedattheendofmanufacturingoperations.
Nevertheless,inspectionofintermediateproductscouldreduce
the totalcostofpoorqualityandimprovetheoutgoingquality.
Possible extensionsofthispapercouldbecarriedouttodevelop
integratedproduction,samplinginspectionandmaintenance
models formultistagemanufacturingsystems.Thosemodels
should addressimportantdesignproblemsinmultistagesystems
such asoptimalinspectionlocation,samplingplanoptimizationat
each inspectionpointandoptimalqualitycontrolofcomplex
productswithmanyattributes.Furtherresearchcouldbecon-
ducted tostudymoresophisticatedcontinuoussamplingplans
such asthe Dodge-Torrey's(1951) improvementsoftheCSP-1plan
(i.e., CSP-2andCSP-3)andthemultilevelcontinuoussampling
plans assuggestedby Lieberman andSolomon(1955). Themain
advantageofthoseplansistheirabilitytomeettheAOQL
requirementwithlessinspectioneffortthantheCSP-1.
