More than half of anthropogenic particles ingested by fishes in the English Channel were rayon, which is made of cellulose compounds (Lusher et al., 2013). Among detritivores, 27.6% of the digestive tracts of nine invertebrates colonizing the dead leaves of Neptune grass contained various sized and colored man-made cellulose fibers (Remy et al., 2015). By inspecting fish and shellfish on sale, Rochman et al. found that 28% and 25% of sampled fish from Indonesia and the USA and 33% of USA shellfish contained anthropogenic debris. All particles in fish from Indonesia were plastic, in contrast to those in the USA, which were primarily textile fibers (Rochman et al., 2015).
