Delineating the field of coaching
Various authorities have sought to identify the different types of coaching.
The European Mentoring and Coaching Council (2006) lists 14 in its report
on coaching competencies and standards, and the Executive Coaching
Handbook (Executive Coaching Forum 2004) identifies a similar number,
which include leadership development, career planning, performance
improvement, behavioural change, assessment/feedback processes and presentation/
communication skills. The authors of this handbook, an experienced
group of US-based coaches, make the important point that executive
coaching can involve many of these types of coaching at different times.
