Yield of cucumber is determined by fruit fresh weight. When
using mechanistic photosynthetic driven crop growth models to
predict yield of cucumber, the parameter of dry matter content
(DMC) is needed to convert dry matter into fruit fresh weight. DMC
is dependent on the relationship between growth in fresh matter
and dry mater that is still poorly understood. Therefore, DMC
is assumed to be a fixed value in such models. This assumption
could result in an error of over 25% in predicted fruit fresh weight
(Marcelis, 1992b, 1993a,b). The poorly understanding mechanism
on how nitrogen affects dry matter partitioning may result in further
prediction error of cucumber yield. To avoid those prediction
inaccuracies, we proposed a photo-thermal based model to predict
fruit morphogenesis growth and yield. The impacts of nitrogen on
fruit growth and yield were quantified by linking the leaf nitrogen
content to parameters of this model.
