4. Discussion
The process of biodegradation is an evolving method for the removal and degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons (Medina-Bellver et al., 2005). In the present study, effect of nutrients and illumination on fungal hydrocarbon degradation was investigated. Microbial diversity of hydrocarbon degrading microbes plays an important role in clean up of contaminated soil. Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus terreus and Penicillium chrysogenum are frequently isolated from petrochemical contaminated soils ( Elshafie et al., 2007). Similarly in this study strains belonging to these genera were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soil.
