2.1. Preparation of membranes
Random and multiblock copolymers based on poly(arylene ether sulfone) were synthesized based on a process described in the literature [14] and [15]. The molecular structure of the copolymers is shown in Fig. 1. The polymers were first dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Second, these solutions were cast on glass substrates with an applicator and dried. The obtained films were washed with deionized water, and then acidified with 1 M H2SO4, and finally washed with deionized water. Table 1 lists descriptions of the membranes. The molecular weights of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments in these membranes were measured using gel permeation chromatography (Tosoh Corporation, HLC-8220GPC) with polystyrene standard, TSK-GEL Super AWM-H column and TSK-GEL Super AW-H guard column. They were measured before hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments were combined. Membrane 1 was composed of a random copolymer, and membranes 2, 3, and 4 were composed of multiblock copolymers. All the membranes had IECs of 1.4 meq/g.
