The initial academic equivalence of the two control and two experimental classes was determined by using the students' social studies grade point average. Academic achievement was measured with a content specific final examination. Self-esteem was measured with the Cooper smith Self-Esteem Inventory Form A as a pre and posttest. No significant difference was found between the two groups on the pre-experimental measures. At the end of the study there was no significant difference between experimental and control groups, which indicated that treatment specific materials neither increase nor decrease academic achievement when used with a TGT reward structure.
