Challenge yourself to solve a problem you are facing in "real life." Then examine the methods you used to solve the problem. Was the problem-solving process linear? Could you describe the process you used in terms of the DAPIC model? Did you solve the problem alone or did you need to work with others to solve the problem? Did you need someone else’s expertise? Now compare this process to what happened the last time you asked a student to solve a problem in your classroom. You’ll likely better understand the connections that students are missing when content and problem-solving processes are taught in isolation.
