Five papers were chosen because it is close to the logistic limit of how many can be prepared "simultaneously"; in addition, the sample size had to be small enough so each volunteer (5) would have enough time to examine each of the reaction papers within a 5-minute span. Any more papers or volunteers would cause an unacceptable delay between the first and last volunteer. The total number of readings (15) for each amanitin quantity was belived to be sufficient for the determination of the detection limit (defined as the lowest quantity with 100% agreement).
