Caribbean cargo finds its way to North America via the container ports in
Florida and Georgia (Miami, Savannah). Liner shipping services between Europe
and North America are primarily calling at ports north of Hampton Roads, VA.
Construction of a new lock system in the Panama Canal would allow vessels of up
to 12,500 TEU to offer ‘‘round-the-world’’ services. That is expected to increase
this geographical specialization. However, the European port system is expected to
remain more diffuse.
