The rest of this article is structured as follows: First we examine some of the properties of georeferenced textual information. Next, we examine some of the properties of the cognitive handling of geographic space by humans and how this influences the creation of texts with geo- references. Then we examine the role of gazetteers, ontologies and Thesauri in georeferencing textual documents and how users can search for georeferenced information before reviewing some project relevant to geographic information retrieval.
