The purpose of this report is ambitious: to provide a framework about, and a view of, the way in which technology — primarily digital technology — will evolve over the course of the next decade, and to help organizations plan their response to these changes. In doing this we also hope to put the emerging technologies into context; too much writing in this area is a rehash of 'The next new thing,' all boffins and breathlessness. Yet it is now 20 years since the invention of the World Wide Web, and 10, or more, since social media started to evolve.
Looking further back, it is 40 years since the protocols which constitute the Internet were completed. In short, we have enough perspective to start to draw some conclusions about the nature of change in the digital world. We no longer have to begin the world anew each morning as if each digital day were our first.
