Personal leadership style behavior is also different between leaders and managers (Toor &
Ofori, 2008). Even as leaders and managers differ in traits, character and personality, both coexist in
the same sphere; one cannot live without the other. They both support each other and each one
takes the lead when circumstances dictate. For example, a visionary leader cannot make a successful
organization without structure and set processes in place to achieve the company vision. Similarly, a
structured, well-oiled machine is simply just that, running efficiently, but simply grinding day-to-day
operations without a long-term vision or a plan to achieve a higher goal. Conceptually, few people
have both great leadership and management skills; many have strong leadership, but weak managerial skills, and a substantial amount of individuals appear to have strong managerial, but weak
leadership skills (Lakshman, 2006). This indicates that solid managers may not be great leaders and
that competent leaders are not necessarily strong managers.
