The pig farm in this case study in located at a cross of two highways in Chuburi Province, Thailand. Opposite to the farm are a gas station and some neighboring buildings. The farm currently has 15000 pigs in barns, which produce large quantity of waste. There are two existed open Waste Ponds (WP1 and WP2) of 130 m by 45 m (WP1) and 220 m by 24 m (WP2), respectively to contain the excretion. On one side of the waste ponds are the Evaporation Ponds (EP1 and EP2) to contain the degraded overflow from the waste ponds, as shown in Photo 1. On the other side are the pig barns, which supply animal residual to the waste ponds. The pungent smell from the two open impoundments and heavy fly concentration result in complaints from the neighbors. Motivated by the complaints of the neighbors on the pungent odor and the potential of using the biogas to generate electricity, the owner of the farm decided to cover the waste ponds with floating covers of HDPE geomembrane.
