Preliminary analysis
Data acquired through the post experimental questionnaire (not tabulated) indicate that, on average, participants participated seriously, found the task interesting, and were motivated to perform well. The data also indicate that, on average, participants agreed with the statement that “[...] the questions were difficult.”11 Manipulation checks in the post experimental questionnaire confirm that both manipulations were successful. The manipulation of the impact of performance reporting on others was checked with the following two items, scored on a five-point Likert scale (fully disagree—fully agree):The higher the score I reported, the higher the payoff of the other participants was,andThe higher the score I reported, the lower the payoff of the other participants was.
