This study found that the difference between males and females in the VMO:VL ratio was not statistically significant during step down and SLR activities. Accordingly, this study suggests that the difference in incidence of patellofemoral pain syndrome between genders is not influenced by quadriceps ratios, when participants are asymptomatic. It appears that it is appropriate to compare asymptomatic male and female VMO:VL ratios when cohorts are not matched for gender. Further study is suggested to investigate how the findings of this study compare with those of symptomatic cohorts
