Table 1 presents the profiles of respondents. Respondents were comprised of 677 line-level employees and 228 managers. Line- level respondents were comprised of 192 Millennials (28.4%), 248 Gen-Xers (36.6%), and 237 Baby boomers (35%). There were 225 (33.2%) males and 440 (65%) females with a mean age of 36 years. Respondents had been working for an average of 4.2 years in the current company. Almost 73% of the respondents had been with the current company for less than 5 years. Out of 228 managers, 30 belonged to Millennials (13.2%), 89 to Gen-Xers (39.0%), and 109 to Baby boomers (47.8%) generations. There were 78 (34.2%) males and 150 (65.8%) females with a mean age of 41 years. Respondents had been working for an average of 6.6 years in the current com pany. Almost 57% of the respondents had been with the current company for more than 5 years.
As presented in Table 2, results of both the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure of sampling adequacy test and the Bartlett’s test of sphericity (p < 0.001) indicated that the set data were appropriate for exploratory factor analysis. The result of the principle
component factor analysis indicated that there were two underlying dimensions (factors) of hospitality line-level employee’s and managers’ perceptions of younger managers explaining 55.67% of the variance. Those underlying dimensions were labeled as “competency” and “slacking”. The principle component factor analysis also identified two underlying dimensions (factors) of hospitality line-level employee’s and managers’ perceptions of older managers explaining 58.45% of the variance. Those dimensions were labeled as “connectedness” and “financial orientation.” The Cronbach’s Alpha tests indicated that reliability coefficients of all of the constructs were .70 or above except for the “financial orientation” dimension. While the overall reliability score for financial orientation dimension was 0.61, it was 0.55 for the managers group and .64 for the line-level group. While the reliability score for the line-level group might be acceptable according to Hair et al. (2010) because they represent the lower limit of acceptability (.60–.70), reliability scores for the managers grouping was found to be lower than the limit recommended by Hair et al. (2010). Therefore, the financial orientation dimension was eliminated.
Utilizing a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) test, this study examined differences in line-level employees’ and managers’ perceptions of their younger and older managers by generations and job position across three generational cohorts, while controlling for length of employees tenure with the company. Wilks’ Lambda test indicated that while line-level employees’ length of tenure with the company had a significant effect on their perceptions of older and younger managers (F = 4.70, p = 0.00), managers tenure did not have any significant effect on their perceptionsof older and
younger Examination
