A: We are representing group 2. Today, we are going to talk about our agency at the headquarters.
B:First, we comes to the history.
In 1906, His Royal Highness Prince Chumphon Khet Udomsak took meteorology and adapted it as a regular subject at the Royal Thai Navy Academy. About the office, it was under control of a small section as the Water Saving Division of the Royal Irrigation Department in the Ministry of Agriculture. Until now it has been changed its status and under control by many ministries. At present, it has carried out projects under the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as the Meteorological Department. With its 96 year long history, the office has been relocated east of Bangkok since 1992 then.
The present Director-General of Meteorology Service is Mr. Wanchai Sakudomchai.
The Thai Meteorological Department is responsible for checks, alerts, and providing air and seismic data to aviation, the general public and relevant agencies. We also operate with other sections inside and outside of the department that the air conditions affect people’s daily lives.
A: Now, let’s see in the Organization.
Within the structure of organization, the department is divided into 8 bureaus in the Headquarters and 5 regional centers that settled in the North, the Upper Northeast, the Lower Northeast, and both sides of the South (the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea)
Let’s see in the organization chart below:
From the chart you can see that the headquarters of Meteorology has the Director General as big boss, together with 3 key assistants as deputy director-generals, looking over all above bureaus (bureaus has 8 bureaus as the chart below are…)
and centres (centres have 5 regional centers as the chart below are ….. and all of centre is included 1 bureaus. So, we will have 9 bureaus.
Let me explain about duties and responsibilities bureaus in the chart.
1. Central Administration has been now in control of the Director-General looking after plan, people resource, general management with other government-run offices, and law cases.
2. Met Instrument Bureau must calibrate and maintain equipment for correct weather observation include create new and update machinery to matches world standards.
3. Met Observatory Bureau is survey, check, warn, track, report, and study the weather states at ground, weather conditions, ozone,UV, air pollutions, and over the sea.
4. Seismic Bureau is Observe, warn, track and report any sign of earthquakes or tsunami for send to public quickly within the responsible area.
5. Weather Forecast Bureau is create weather maps, analyze and forecast the weather relating to all communal activities both on land and in the sea for quick service and querying from the general public.
6. Met Development Bureau is storage and provides weather information in addition to, predict long term weather, as well as weather that can be potentially damaging to the economy, society, agriculture, and industry of Thailand.
7. Info Technology Centre is gather, inspect, control, implement and improve telecommunication link to exchange of information related to the Meteorological Department and be the regional telecommunication hub of Southeast Asia.
8. Aero-Met Bureau is Create aero meteorological maps, and send to related severe weather alerts to the airports include gather and compile all relevant aeronautical forecast info for domestic and international flight.
9. Five Met Centres are check, warning, track and study for climate between regional centers. In addition, advise and spread the skill of meteorology and earthquake assessment to the general public and related agencies
