Now, if you are still keen to use color in your layout margins, it is imperative that
you put as much thought into those colors as you did for the map colors. For example,
I mentioned earlier that you can borrow a color used in the map by coordinating
the title or layout background with the same color used to highlight features in the
map. This is called “color echoing.” It is analogous to the poster finishing technique
where the framer chooses frame colors by identifying important but sparse colors in
the artwork. Similarly to the framer’s goal, we choose a color that will complement
the map but not compete with it. In closing, if you are unsure whether the color is
distracting and superfluous or complementary and meaningful, you would be wise
to leave it out.
