Pellet Preparation and Heat Treatment. A mixture containing 0.3 g kaolin/g USY (equal
to 23 wt% kaolinite) and distilled water, which formed a thick suspension, was thoroughly
blended by grinding in a mortar. Kaolin consists of the layer mineral kaolinite,
Al2Si2O5(OH)4. The suspension was then dried at 50°C and the resulting powder was
compacted into pellets. In a second batch, ammonium acetate was used as a blowing agent
and was mixed with binderless USY by grinding manually in a mortar, without addition of
water. Two different proportions were prepared, one with 50% by weight of blowing agent
