Though the literature has shown that negative affect is related to contentious conflict behaviors, differences have not been found for the preference for competitive or distributive management styles (obliging and dominating). This may be due to the fact that most of the research on negative affect in conflict behavior has been concerned with discrete emotions (e.g. Allred et al., 1997), which are briefer, more intense, and cause greater physiological changes (Frijda, 1994). In this sense, compared with emotions, the effect of general mood would be too slight to provoke significant differences.
