Radiation is energy emitted and transferred through matter or space. Ionizing radiation creates enough energy to change a stable atom to an unstable one by ejecting orbital electrons. Examples of ionizing radiation include x-rays, gamma rays, and particulate radiation. Sources of exposure to ionizing radiation include nuclear accidents, occupational exposure, and medial treatments. Ionizing radiation interacts with tissue and can cause somatic (tissues), biological (cells), and hereditary (offspring) damage.
