For hundreds of year, people have heard report of monsters that rise out of the sea to attack ships. Many people now think these “monster” were probably giant squid. Giant squid share many of the same characteristic as other squid. But they are much larger-up to 13 meters (43 feet) in length. They also have the largest eyes of any animal in the world. This helps them catch deep-sea fish.
Their only predators are some kinds of whales. When it is attacked, the giant away. It shoots dark ink into the water. The whale can’t see, so the squid has a chance to swim away.
For years, scientists were unable to catch a giant squid on film. But they did find squid body parts in the stomachs of whales. The scientists were able to use these to figure out how big the squid was. The first photos of a live giant squid were taken in 2004. It is definitely as monstrous as people believed!
