Falling apart
The construction business is popular because there are always things to build. Some of them, like huge buildings and long bridges, are very expensive and investors can earn a lot of money.
If you go into the business, however, do your homework. Otherwise bad things can happen.
During the great flood of 2011, Khlong Rangsit Prayurasakdi, one of the major canalsin the Bangkok area, overflowed, badly damaging thousands of homes.
After the flood, the local government built a cement embankment along the canal. It looked very nice and people were happy that they were safe from future floods.
But they weren't. Several weeks ago, cracks starting appearing in parts of theembankment. Then, yesterday, part of it collapsed. The area was about 100 meters long and five to ten meters wide.
Why? It is still too early to know exactly, but a likely reason is that the canal is now very dry. Normally, the canal water pushes against the embankment, keeping it tightagainst the soil next to it. But with little water, there is no pressure and theembankment has started to fall apart. It looks like someone didn't do their homework.
