Pilots of fighter aircraft as shown in figure 1 are often required to perform high g maneuvers. During these maneuvers, the pilot’s blood tends to collect in the lower extremities. The lack of cerebral blood flow will cause the average person to pass out at 4-5 g’s, which is known as GLOC (g-induced loss of consciousness). The maximum g level can be increased by performing an anti-g straining maneuver (muscular straining to help force the blood back up to the brain).
For training, human centrifuges illustrated in figure 2 are utilized, a simplified model of which is shown in Figure 3(a). The gondola that carries the pilot will be approximated as a uniform cylinder having a radius of 1 m, and a length of 3 m. The 5 m long supporting arm rotates in a horizontal plane and weighs 450 kg. The pilot weighs 80 kg and his center of mass is located at the center of the gondola. The pilot can be then considered as a particle, whereas the gondola is treated as a rigid body of uniform solid cylinder with a weight of 900 kg.
