Every June, on the eve of the Feast of Corpus Christi, a giant carpet is spread out in front of the city hall in La Orotava. It consists of unusual paintings that are made from volcanic sand. The sand is mined from the Teide volcano’s crater on one of the Canary Islands. Ten people spend 40 days to create one picture like this using 23 shades of sand. In 2006, they had created a 10225,7 sq.ft (950 sq.m) carpet and became a Guinness World Record.
