MEDICAL INSURANCE
The cost of medical care in the U.S. is very high when compared to costs in other countries. All international
students are required by Washington state law to have accidental injury and illness insurance coverage while
attending the UW (WAC 478-160-260). All non-immigrant visa holders must either purchase health insurance
available through UW IELP or show proof of health insurance that covers accidental injury and illness while they
are in the US. If a student has medical insurance from his/her country, we need documentation in English that
clearly explains the insurance coverage: overseas travel coverage, benefits of coverage, and the length of the

medical coverage. A certificate of medical insurance or an official medical insurance card is acceptable proof of
insurance. Students who have been approved for a quarter break can request and pay for IELP health insurance
during that quarter.
