The Darhad Basin is located in northern Mongolia, close to the
Mongolia-Russia border (Figs. 1 and 2). It is up to 40 km wide
and 110 km long extended from north to south and its structure
is similar to that of the neighboring Hovsgol Basin. The Hovsgol
Basin is occupied by a deep lake, whereas the Darhad Basin is
completely filled by sediments. Similarly to the Hovsgol, the
Darhad is a high-mountain basin; its floor is elevated to 1540e
1600 m a.s.l. The basin is bounded by the Horidol Saridag and
Bayanzurh Ranges in the east and Ulaan Taiga Mountains in the
west, which are up to 3300 m high. The 3500 m high Great Sayan
and Munku-Sardyk Ranges are located north of the Darhad
Basin.
