Application of pigments into medium-temperature boric-silicate
glaze (Pw 141 91, Glazura a.s., CZ) was performed (glazing
temperature ¼ 1050 C, leadless glaze) in order to evaluate the
colour properties of the pigments exposed to extreme conditions.
Application of the pigments into a glaze is conditioned by its high
chemical and thermal stability. The pigment addition into the glaze
comprised of 10 wt%. Other glazes for higher glazing temperatures
were tested as well but they were not used eventually as the calcinating
temperature 1050 C was sufficient.
A special test was used for evaluation of colour and hiding
power of pigments. This test uses only simple tools and provides
sufficient results. An organic matrix with addition of 10 wt% of
pigment was formed. The paste was further applied by Birde
applicator on glossy, white, non-absorptive paper. The obtained
pigments were in masstone, therefore their colour properties in tint
tone were evaluated as well. When testing the tint tone, the
pigment was mixed with 10 wt% TiO2 (RG-15, Precheza a.s., CZ) and
the colour properties were evaluated using a spectrocolorimeter.
