Diffusion
Diffusion the intervention and process field of knowledge is closely linked to the process phase of creation, for the exchange and distribution of relevant knowledge is a key prerequisite for the development and dissemination of new ideas and learning. Obstacles to diffusion may have very different origins. Structural causes include organizational hierarchies, functional differentiation and separation, dysfunctional workflow organization, and, in cases where related functions are not located together or near each other, poor space management. The frequency and radius of communication routines can be analyzed with netgraphing methods (Romhardt 1998: 222) in order to see whether communication flows are in line with business processes. If they are not, space management tools can help optimize these processes. Furthermore, the communication structure is vitally important. Which channels exist? Which are horizontal and which are vertical? Which channels are used in both ways? What are the dominant communication styles between important knowledge centers in the organization? Does information and Knowledge flow one – way, or is there rather a reciprocal exchange with similar or different priorities for the parties involved? Are discussions, dialogues, or both a feature of the communication process?
