METHOD
A self-administered mailed questionnaire was used to survey conference
motivations, inhibitors, and facilitators of association members in attending
international conferences. Previous studies on convention tourism (Price,
1993; Grant, 1994; as cited in Oppermann & Chon, 1997) and travel inhibitors
(Um & Crompton, 1992; Crompton & Ankomah, 1993; Sonmez & Graefe,
1998) were used to construct items in the questionnaire. The questionnaire
contained five sections: travel behaviors, conference motivations, conference

inhibitors, conference facilitators, and demographic profiles. The respondents
were asked to indicate the level of agreement on a 5-point Likert-type scale
ranking from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree) regarding the conference
motivations, conference inhibitors, and conference facilitators. A panel
of experts in the field of travel and tourism checked the content validity of the
instrument. A pilot test was given to 198 conference attendees of the Fifth Annual
Conference of the Asian Pacific Tourism Association in Hong Kong in
August 1999 with the help of faculty and students of the Department of Hotel
and Tourism Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The purpose
of the pilot test was to revise the instrument for use with actual subjects.
Based on the feedback of the panel of experts and the pilot test, the questionnaire
was modified. The target population of this study is association members
who have been to international conferences and share the same interests in an
association. Their attendance is optional because they partially pay for their
own registration fee, accommodations, and per diem expenses. A census of
600 association members was drawn from a list of the 2000 International
Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (CHRIE) conference
participants. In August 2000, the researchers sent a self-report survey questionnaire
to 600 conference participants of the 2000 International CHRIE conference.
A follow-up post card was sent two weeks later to remind
non-respondents. As of October 27, 2000, a total of 231 returned questionnaires
were received. Out of this number, ten were returned due to incorrect
addresses. The valid number of questionnaires for analysis was 221, yielding a
response rate of 37%. Univariate analysis (mean) and multivariate analysis
(exploratory factor analysis) were used to (a) determine frequency distribution
of conference participants’ behaviors and demographic profiles, their conference
motivations, inhibitors, and facilitators; and (b) identify the underlying
dimensions of the conference motivations, inhibitors, and facilitators.
