The Ministry of Health and Welfare Designates a MERS-CoV Treatment Center
- National Medical Center becomes the designated hospital for MERS-CoV treatment–
The Ministry of Health and Welfare (Minister: Moon Hyung-pyo) announced that the National Medical Center is designated as “MERS-CoVTreatment Center” in order to ensure implement MERS-CoV containment measure effectively and systemically.
In addition, local governments will designate region-based and zone-based MERS-CoV medical facilities so that they primarily focus on MERS-CoV preventive and treatment measures.
As the nation’s key public hospital, the National Medical Center will focus on treating MERS-CoV cases while overseeing and managing treatment status at all region and zonebased medical facilities. In addition, it will develop MRES-CoV treatment guidelines, and support region-based medical facilities.
* Number of beds at the National Medical Center: 435 (18 in negative pressure room)
The designated region-based MERS-CoV hospitals will be in full charge of treating MERS-CoV patients in the region after securing the whole hospital or all beds for MERS-CoV cases.
Zone-based MERS-CoV medical facilities will intensively care MERS-CoV patients in serious conditions, who could not be treated at region-based hospitals.
As the National Medical Center becomes the designated MERS-CoV hospital, all existing patients* at the hospital will be transferred to other hospitals so that the hospital pays full attention to MERS-CoV cases.
*Some cases excluded (such as AIDS patients)
An official of the Ministry of Health and Welfare said, “We believe the designation of MERS-CoV hospitals by region and zone will serve as an opportunity to efficiently mobilize and utilize medical resources necessary for the treatment of MERS-CoV cases.”
- “In addition, we will do our best to contain the virus as early as possible by focusing our efforts on treatment through the public-private collaborative network built around region and zone based medical facilities.”
